World Teachers’ Day

World Teachers’ Day has been organized annually on 5 October since 1994, to commemorate the signing of the 1966 UNESCO and ILO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers. This Recommendation sets benchmarks related to the rights and responsibilities of teachers, standards for their initial preparation and subsequent training, their mobilization and employment, and the conditions for teaching and learning. As for the UNESCO recommendation regarding the status of teaching staff in higher education, it was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 recommendation regarding the status of teaching and research staff in higher education.

After the adoption of Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education, and the adoption of Monitor 4c dedicated to the key role of teachers in achieving the 2030 Education Agenda, World Teachers’ Day has become an opportunity to celebrate achievements and consider ways to address the remaining challenges, in order to strengthen the teaching profession.

It is worth noting that World Teachers’ Day is organized in partnership between the United Nations Children’s Fund, the United Nations Development Program, the International Labor Organization and the International Federation of Teachers.

Celebrating World Teachers’ Day 2021

A year and a half after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, World Teachers’ Day 2021 focuses on providing teachers with the support they need to fully contribute to the recovery process, and takes the theme of “The teacher is the mainstay of reviving education” as its slogan.

A series of global and regional events are being organized over five days to review the impact of the pandemic on the teaching profession, highlight the promising and effective policy response, and seek to lay the foundations necessary to ensure that teachers are able to develop their full potential. This year’s celebration of World Teachers’ Day coincides with the meeting of the Joint Committee of Experts between the International Labor Organization and UNESCO on the implementation of the two recommendations relating to the situation of workers in education, from 4 to 8 October 2021.

As part of the world’s celebrations on this occasion, the teacher: Khadija Ahmed Al Hosani, an Arabic language teacher in the United Arab Emirates, wrote an article and wanted to share it with you.
