International Day of Older Persons 2021: Digital property rights for all ages

The 2021 theme “Digital Equality for All Ages” emphasizes the need to enable older people to access and meaningfully participate in the digital world .

The Fourth Industrial Revolution, characterized by rapid digital innovation and exponential growth, has transformed all sectors of society, including how we live, work, and relate to one another. Technological advances offer great hope for accelerating progress towards the SDGs. However, half of the world’s population is still off track, with the clearest contrast between the most developed (87%) and least developed (19%) countries.

Recent reports issued by the International Telecommunication Union indicate that women and the elderly suffer from digital inequality more than other groups of society because they lack technologies, or because they do not fully benefit from the opportunities offered by technical progress.

At the same time, with efforts now being made to connect more people to contemporary technology, clear new dangers have emerged. For example, cybercrime and misinformation threaten the human rights, privacy and security of the elderly, and the speed of adoption of digital technology has exceeded policies and governance at the national, regional and global levels. Therefore, the roadmap of the Secretary-General seeks to address these challenges by recommending concrete actions to harness the best of these technologies and mitigate their risks.

Suitable goals this year:

Raising awareness of the importance of digital inclusion for the elderly, and addressing stereotypes, biases and discrimination related to digitalization while taking into account standards .

Social and cultural right to autonomy.

Highlighting the policies of utilizing digital technologies to fully achieve the sustainable development goals.

Address public and private interests, in the areas of availability, connectivity, design, affordability, capacity building, structures and innovation.

Explore the role of policies and legal frameworks to ensure the privacy and safety of the elderly in the digital world.

Highlight the need for a legally binding instrument on the rights of older persons and a human-centered, multi-pronged human rights approach for a society for all ages.
